Connecting Communities Open House @ Boutwell House | Groton | Massachusetts | United States

Twenty-first Century Groton is a busy place. Many of us are commuting to the office, trying to get things in order before summer vacation season. And of course locally there is town meeting(s), elections, shuttles back and forth to school activities: an endless list of distractions which make it probable that we could spend our entire stay in town without ever experiencing much of the natural environment that makes it a unique place to live.

What if you set aside a day just to hang out with the prehistoric inhabitants of Groton and heard them describe nature’s wonders in our town? They would likely tell you about the places they hunted, fished, foraged, and held sacred. Modern geological science tells us that unique geologic formations created in the glacial era evolved to create a near-perfect climate for plant and animal diversity, and made Groton a great place to settle.

This prehistoric human and natural past is what inspired an upcoming event in Groton organized by a coalition of groups including the Groton Trails Committee, the Groton Historical Society and the Nashua River Watershed Association to name just a few.

Along Our Trails 2015 event is a part of a larger effort called “Connecting Communities”, a series of similar events organized by the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area in partnership with the National Park Service.

The Groton event takes place on Sunday, May 31 in Groton and includes a variety of activities from vigorous trail biking to a Groton Historical Society open house at historic Boutwell House.
