Historical interpreter Richard Smith portrays Henry David Thoreau. Author, philosopher and naturalist, Thoreau “traveled a good deal” and journeyed throughout the landscape of New England. The Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area is home to 45 cities and towns that influenced forms of governance and democracy, conservation and social justice. Henry David Thoreau set foot in 39 of them.

Henry David Thoreau often passed through Shirley when he took the Fitchburg Railroad on his trips to Mount Monadnock, Mount Wachusett, Brattleboro, VT, and Quebec.
